Affleck was a supporting winner in 2007 (The Assassination of Jesse James ...), as was Garfield in 2010 (The Social Network). Gosling was nominated in lead for Drive in 2011. Reynolds is making his debut here for an unusual genre role. Washington won twice before, in support in 1989 (Glory) and in lead 1996 (Courage Under Fire). He now ties Anthony Hopkins for most acting wins with 3.

Henson has two prior nominations, in support (2005, Hustle & Flow; 2008, The Curious Case of Benjamin Button). Huppert is debuting. Portman won here in 2010 (Black Swan). Streep is on her 9th overall nomination, having won twice (2008, Doubt; 2009, Julie & Julia). Stone, a previous nominee in support for Birdman, wins for a musical.

In a very competitive race, newbie Patel wins over the field. Ali is new here. Bridges has two prior nods and a win in lead (2009, Crazy Heart). Grant, after years of solid performances going back to 1987's Maurice, finally makes it to the nomination circle. Ogata is also on his first.

Harris and Monáe are on their first nods. Spencer has two prior nods here (2011, The Help; 2013, Fruitvale Station). Weaver returns after an 18 year absence; she has 3 prior nods (1995 support, Copycat; 1997 support, The Ice Storm; 1999 lead, A Map of the 
World). Davis, a winner in 2008 for Doubt, captures the prize again.

Chazelle won a screenplay award in 2014 for Whiplash. Gibson won here in 2004 for The Passion of the Christ. MacKenzie sneaks in as the odd-man out nominee. Scorsese is on his 7th nod in this category, and won twice before (1990, GoodFellas; 2011, Hugo). Jenkins, on his first, wins.
